Odabashian by CENTRO- 1st hand-made rug design workshop in Latin America. April 9-13, 2012

Centro, Mexico’s premier design, architecture and film school recently invited Odabashian to:  Odabashian by CENTRO, A  Rug Design Workshop for it’s Interior Architecture students.

The first of it’s kind in Latin America, the workshop consisted of a five-day, design and process- intensive class focusing on the history, manufacturing, materials and design of hand-made and hand knotted rugs that Odabashian has been manufacturing  for over 91 years and sold in Mexico, Boca Raton, Miami and the world.

The workshop was hosted by Beata Nowicka, Director of the Interior Architecture bachelor program. Each student developed a unique design using the information provided during the initial phase of the workshop. Then, on the final day, each design was presented to a panel of selected professiors from CENTRO, professionals, designers and artists. One of the designs was selected and will be manufactured in a high-density hand-tufted quality rug made of New Zealand wool and bamboo silk.

The winning design will be on display at CENTRO at an exclusive exhibit showcasing the workshop as well as the talent of the students involved.

Odabashian and CENTRO will collaborate in this workshop each year during the Spring semester as part of CENTRO’s mission to further enrich the quality and depth of the Interior Architecture bachelor program.

Set-up progress at the Franz Mayer is moving quickly!

The exhibit showcasing 18 original designs by Mexican architects, industrial and graphic artists opens next April 6 at the Franz Mayer museum of decorative arts in Mexico City.

This week we are completing the exhibit design installation.

It is important to note that this is the first exhibit of it’s kind in Mexico and Latin America. Furthermore, the hand-woven rug is a very clear metaphor of all the materials and  abstract ideas that come together to be manifested on to such an ancient craft. Consider all the below references, origins and concepts that are “woven” on to ONE piece of design for each rug and the location of where it will be exhibited:

  • The company is originally from Mexico City
  • The founder was an Armenian immigrant who grew up in Istanbul.
  • The rug is woven in India by Nepalese craftsmen
  • The materials are from New Zealand, Egypt and India
  • The designers are from Mexico
  • The technique is from Tibet, developed 3000 years ago.
  • The museum houses the collection of a german immigrant

Architect Lorenzo Alvarez supervises the installation progress.

We look forward to sharing this unique collection to the world!

Save the Date! The exhibit goes live on April 6.

The “Castillo de Chapultepec”, Mexico City’s legendary castle, trusts no one but Odabashian to maintain it’s museum-grade rugs.

In 1780 , the Viceroy Matías Gálvez started the construction of a residence at the top of Chapultepec Hill, that would later become a Military School. During the American invasion of 1847, it was one of the last bastions that resisted in Mexico City. Later, in the 1860’s, the emperor Maximilian of Hapsburg arranged this site as his residence because he was captivated by the beautiful views of the Valley of Mexico that could be appreciated from that place; he beautified the castle by adding gardens and sophisticated interior decoration and communicated Chapultepec Castle with the Historical Centre by creating a Parisian style boulevard, which is now the renowned Reforma Avenue With the passing years the Castle became the home of all of Mexico’s presidents until, in 1940, Lázaro Cárdenas donated it to the nation so it could become the National History Museum.

The National History Museum has entrusted all repair, maintenance and cleaning of it’s collection’s hand-made rugs and tapestries to Odabashian since 1935.
